Frank D. Fitzgerald lived in this house, which he acquired during his first term as governor. Born in Grand Ledge in 1885, Fitzgerald was a Republican who served as secretary of state from 1930 to 1934 and as governor during some tumultuous Depression years. He served his first gubernatorial term in 1935-36, and after being out of office in 1937-38, he planned his successful re-election campaign from here. His second term began in January 1939, but it was cut short by his death in this house in March of that year. Because the state did not provide an official mansion at the time, he used this home as the governor's residence. Lansing architect Edwyn C. Bowd designed the residence in 1907. Built for $18,000, the house was set on a high foundation, and its tile roof, massive chimneys, and rounded bay windows reflect Romanesque style.
