Park development began here in 1963 on a 322-foot hill with a limestone base. A stream flowing from the hill plunges over a cliff and disappears through an underground channel. Near the falls are sinks and caverns, and the falls once powered an early grist mill. A pioneer-era whisky distillery stood nearby. Indians and others mined the area for colorfully pigmented rocks used to make paints and dyes. The area also saw early oil-drilling efforts and was the site of a one-room school and a large horticultural nursery.
