A prehistoric mound survives within Fort Gaines Cemetery in Fort Gaines, Georgia, preserving evidence of earlier human activity beneath a place now used for burial. Recognized as an archaeological site, it reflects an older landscape still visible within the town despite its modern cemetery setting. Because it had not been excavated as of 1974, its age, builders, and contents remained unconfirmed. Its importance rests in the survival of this mound and the way it preserves traces of the area's earlier past within a later community burial ground.
