A Civil War memorial erected and dedicated on July 3, 1909, was replaced by this veterans memorial, while the statue from the earlier memorial was preserved. Its inscription honored the heroes of 1861 to 1865 who gave their lives that the nation might live, and it was erected by Hancock WRC No. 282 and Hancock Post No. 579 GAR.
