This typical three-room miner's house reflects the simple, no-frills construction common throughout the New River Gorge coal towns. Known as "Jenny Linds," these three- to four-room structures date from between 1925 and the 1940s. This house came from Sprague, West Virginia, where both it and the coal mine were owned by the New River Company. Miners rented such houses from the company, with rent deducted from their paychecks. To help make ends meet, families often rented out beds in their homes to single miners. Each house had its own outhouse in the backyard because the coal towns had no sewage facilities.
