General Joseph Hernandez owned three plantations along the Matanzas River: Belle Vista, Byck's Hammock, and Mala Compra. Mala Compra was his principal plantation and residence. The publicly owned Mala Compra Plantation Greenway lies within the historic plantation boundaries. In Spanish, "mala compra" means bad purchase or bad bargain, though the exact reason for the name is unknown.
