General stores have been in wide use since the late 1860's. Some of the first general stores were created in Paris, France, as a means of attracting more business. The settling of the Wild West contributed to the growing number of general stores in the United States. Because the new settlers were few in number but still had the same widespread and basic requirements, the need grew for one store that could fill all the necessities.
