The Cherokee came from the East Tennessee and North Carolina area. General Sam Houston was Governor of Tennessee until he resigned and joined the Cherokees in the Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. His wife Talahina was the daughter of the Cherokee chief John Jolly. Houston later became the first President of the Republic of Texas, first Governor of, and later, U.S. Senator from the State of Texas.
