In Barre, Vermont, the Vermont Granite Museum preserves the granite quarrying and processing industry that shaped the city’s economy from the late 19th century onward. It occupies the former Jones Brothers Granite Shed, built in 1895 as an early straight shed where large stone blocks were finished into products such as cemetery markers. Founded in 1882, Jones Brothers became Vermont’s oldest operating granite works before closing in 1975, and this shed is the principal surviving building of its larger complex. Acquired for museum use in 1997 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it also supports the Stone Arts School, where students learn historic and modern granite-working techniques.
