Lamar Buffalo Ranch, in Yellowstone’s Lamar River valley in northeastern Wyoming, was established in 1907 to help preserve one of the last free-roaming American bison herds in the United States. Beginning with 28 bison moved from Fort Yellowstone, it managed a semi-domesticated herd that was later released to interbreed with the park’s wild bison, strengthening the natural population. After that effort succeeded, the ranch produced hay for winter feeding until the 1950s, before policy shifted toward less human interference in wildlife ecology. Today it survives as a historic district whose preserved buildings support education and stewardship work.
