Church of the Assumption, a Roman Catholic church in Phoenix on Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, grew out of the Upper Peninsula’s copper-mining settlements. Authorized in 1858 by Bishop Frederic Baraga and built in 1868–1869 near Clifton, it was first consecrated as St. Mary’s and later became the Church of the Assumption. After mining decline emptied the area, the building was dismantled and moved to Phoenix in 1899, where it was rebuilt with stronger Gothic features. Masses continued there until 1957. Bought by the Keweenaw County Historical Society in 1985, the restored church also serves as a museum and a place for weddings and memorial services.
