Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area in California’s Diablo Range combines off-highway recreation with a layered industrial and natural history. Spread across more than 1,500 acres in Corral Hollow, it offers riding terrain from grassland to steep canyons. The area’s earlier significance grew from coal and clay discoveries that led to the Carnegie Brick and Pottery Company in 1902 and a company town that briefly flourished before floods, boiler explosions, and a 1916 sale ended the enterprise. Later used for grazing and picnicking, the area became a center for off-road riding from the 1930s onward. Since the state’s 1979 purchase, it has remained both a recreation area and a managed wildlife habitat.
