Bullhead Camp Cemetery
Sugar Land, Texas
History
1
During the construction of the James Reese Career and Technical Center in 2018, a once unmarked burial site was unearthed. The remains of 95 individuals were laid to rest in this cemetery. Research has revealed that the burials are those of African American citizens who were incarcerated, then leased to a local plantation to provide labor through the state-sanctioned convict leasing system following the national abolition of slavery in 1865. The cemetery is believed to have been used between 1879 and 1911 and was associated with various labor camps including J.A. Freeman Camp, L.A. Ellis Camp #2, L.A. Ellis Camp #1, and Imperial Farm Camp, TX #1.
