Bullhead Camp Cemetery
Sugar Land, Texas
History
A once unmarked burial site, unearthed during construction of the James Reese Career and Technical Center in 2018, held the remains of 95 individuals. Research indicates that those buried there were African American citizens who were incarcerated and then leased to a local plantation for labor through the state-sanctioned convict leasing system after the national abolition of slavery in 1865. The cemetery is believed to have been used between 1879 and 1911 and was associated with labor camps including J.A. Freeman Camp, L.A. Ellis Camp #2, L.A. Ellis Camp #1, and Imperial Farm Camp, TX #1.
