Around midnight on March 26, 2003, a bright orange fireball crossed much of the Midwest before meteorite fragments fell over Park Forest, Illinois, south of Chicago. The fall became especially notable because debris struck buildings in a densely populated suburb, including at least two houses and the local fire station. Numerous stones were recovered, and researchers classified the material as an L5 chondrite. More than 18 kilograms were eventually found, with estimates placing the original meteoroid between at least 900 and as much as 7,000 kilograms. Specimens are preserved in Chicago institutions, including the Field Museum, and a larger fragment has been displayed at the Adler Planetarium.
