During the Civil War, two Union regiments of Illinois Cavalry traveled Springfield - Liberty Road on May 1, 1863, en route to Baton Rouge. Col. B.H. Grierson commanded the diversionary raid before Gen. Grant's land movement against Vicksburg, Mississippi.
