Roberts Island complex is a late Woodland archaeological site on Roberts Island in Florida’s Crystal River, separate from but closely tied to the main Crystal River center. It emerged as that older ceremonial center declined in the 7th or 8th century, with continued pottery traditions suggesting a gradual shift in population and ritual importance rather than a break. Ceremonial feasting changed, emphasizing oysters and other bivalves instead of mammal meat. The complex includes three shell mounds and three middens arranged around a possible plaza, with Mounds A and B showing unusual stepped forms. Largely undisturbed, the site is considered culturally comparable in importance to Crystal River itself.
