At Crystal River, the Sand Burial Mound, also called Mound G, contained burials that differed sharply from those in the Main Burial Complex across the plaza. The people buried there were not accompanied by elaborate grave goods, but were laid to rest with shells, bone tools, and pottery. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the Sand Burial Mound and the Main Burial Complex were used at the same time. In the Sand Burial Mound, burials included broken and undecorated pottery pieces, while the Main Burial Complex contained highly decorated whole pots. This difference in burial customs suggests that different social groups may have been buried in the two graveyards at a large ceremonial place where multiple groups came together.
