The headwaters of the Auglaize are just south of this location on the old Auglaize-Miami portage trail, the most direct canoe route between Lake Erie and the Ohio River. Long before white men arrived and until 1817, an Indian settlement called Tawa Town stood here, and during the Indian Wars it became a rallying point and served as a base of operations for Indian warriors.
