The Highland community is now represented by a corner post from Uncle Charlie Wysong's blacksmith shop and Highland Cemetery. From 1851-1884, the Wysong blacksmith shop stood on the Wysong's Old Highland Farm, a Texas Century Farm. Although tornados struck the area twice, the shop was rebuilt. Marian Gibson Wysong, the last Wysong family member to live on the farm, emphasized the significance of the post as a reminder of what had happened there. The blacksmith shop served as the first post office north of McKinney from 1853-1873 and continued supplying freighters with wagons until the railroad arrived in 1872 and ended freighting from Jefferson. In January 2010, as development and construction of the Outer Loop approached, permission was obtained from Collin County to move the corner post to Highland Cemetery for preservation. It was reoriented to match its original position and set at as accurate a depth as possible. During its removal, artifacts from the blacksmith shop were found, leading to an archaeological dig approved by Collin County officials, and numerous additional artifacts were excavated under the guidance of Page Thomas, Collin County blacksmith.
