Henry W. Coe State Park preserves a vast, rugged stretch of the Diablo Range east of Morgan Hill and has grown into the largest state park in northern California. Its ridges, canyons, seasonal creeks, reservoirs, and broad watersheds protect a remote backcountry that includes the Henry W. Coe State Wilderness, also known locally as the Orestimba Wilderness. The land carries traces of an older trail route later linked with Joaquin Murrieta, then of ranching history through Pine Ridge Ranch, home to Henry Willard Coe Jr. and his family. Donations, public ownership, and later acquisitions transformed that ranch into today’s immense preserve, valued for intact chaparral, woodland, and abundant wildlife.
