On this site, community sandlot baseball flourished for decades. In 1946, John Abraham Henry's cornfield became the community baseball field for the Wee Wee Tigers. By 1948, under coach Frederick Powell, the team became the Mitchellville Tigers and played here until about 1961. In 1961, William "Doffey" Jones, owner and manager of the Washington Blacksox, built a sandlot baseball stadium here, and the team played on this field until about 1971. Established in 1928, the Washington Blacksox played until 1992 and won numerous team championships. Baseball Hall of Famer Walter "Buck" Leonard of the Homestead Grays visited this field and encouraged the team.
