Canary Islanders (Isleños) settled Terre-aux-Boeufs (Cattle Land) after its parceling in 1778 by Pierre Philippe Marigny, during the regime of Governor Bernardo de Gálvez, for whom St. Bernard Church and Civil Parish were named. The first burial there was Joseph Mesa on June 6, 1787.
