During the Creek Indian War of 1813-14, Fort Mims was the site of what was called the most brutal massacre in American history. Indians took the fort with heavy loss, then killed all but about 36 of some 550 people in the fort. In this phase of the War of 1812, the Creeks had been armed by the British at Pensacola.
