Tulsa Zoo, an eighty-four-acre institution in Mohawk Park, traces its origins to 1927 and grew from early features like Monkey Island and a WPA-built alligator exhibit into one of Oklahoma’s leading zoological institutions. Owned by the City of Tulsa and privately managed as a nonprofit since 2010, it combines large outdoor habitats with immersive indoor exhibits such as Lost Kingdom, the Rainforest, and Wild Life Trek. Its history includes early national accreditation, major additions like Chimpanzee Connection and Sea Lion Cove, public praise and controversy, and setbacks involving animal care. Today it remains a major family destination with a broad conservation program supporting more than 200 projects.
