Hoċokata Ti in Shakopee, Minnesota, is a cultural center and museum operated by the sovereign Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Meaning “lodge at the center of the camp,” it was envisioned for decades before construction began in 2016 and opened in 2019. Its design reflects Dakota beliefs through circular forms, seven tipi-like structures, and grounds that include a symbolic stream and a traditional bark lodge. The public museum presents Mdewakanton Dakota history, culture, language, and community stories from a Dakota perspective, while the larger center supports gatherings, education, ceremonies, and preservation of a large collection of cultural materials.
