The historic Lafayette & Indianapolis Railroad became part of Abraham Lincoln’s final and inaugural journeys through Whitestown. On May 1st, 1865, at 1:07 a.m., the Lincoln Funeral Train passed through town as mourners lined the tracks in the middle of the night to pay homage to the assassinated 16th U.S. President. The train traveled more than 1,600 miles carrying Lincoln’s body for nearly two weeks, and more than three million people gathered along the route between Washington, D.C. and Springfield, IL. It has been called the grandest funeral spectacle in U.S. history. Lincoln’s Inaugural Train had passed through Whitestown on the same tracks on February 11th, 1861.
