Stuttering Tom Lenox was a mule skinner who drove teams of mules and cared for them. The mules pulled wagons loaded with iron ore and charcoal to the works. His favorite animals were Belle and Nellie, both gray mules. When work was slow at the Maramec Iron Works, the teams were rented out to surrounding farms.
