Prospect Peak Fire Lookout, on Prospect Peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park near Mineral, California, was built around 1912 and is regarded as one of the oldest surviving U.S. Forest Service fire lookouts in the nation. The square wood-frame tower, topped by a pyramidal roof, reflected an early standard Forest Service design, with tall windows and shiplap siding extending below the windows and onto the roof. Although other similar lookouts once stood in the park, this is believed to be the only surviving example. Despite abandonment and the loss of its original windows and roof shingles, it remains largely intact and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
