Mount Clemens, first settled in the late 18th century and platted in 1818 by Christian Clemens, became the county seat of Macomb County that same year and has continued in that leadership role. The city long served as a center of manufacturing, at various times producing farm implements, cooperage products, auto parts, world renowned boats, dinnerware, and commercial roses. The Clinton River, running through the city, played an important role in its industrial history and remains a focal point for residents and visitors. From 1873 to 1972, people from around the world came to Mount Clemens for its healing mineral waters, and during that era the city had eleven major bath houses along with numerous hotels, rooming houses, and entertainment facilities, making it one of Michigan's major tourist destinations from 1880 to 1920.
