Russell County government was organized at Russell’s Fort on May 9, 1786, with Alexander Barnett as County Lieutenant, David Ward as Sheriff, and Henry Dickenson as Clerk; the justices were Henry Smith, Henry Dickenson, David Ward, John Thompson, and Samuel Ritchie. The present courthouse was built in 1874.
