The Old Timer's Cabin was one of the first buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp in Itasca State Park. The first Itasca CCC camp, called SP-1, was established just outside the park's north boundary, and this unique cabin was the first building project for the CCC boys. As snow began to fall in December 1933, the ground was cleared and construction began. Under the direction of a local experienced foreman, known as a LEMS for local experienced men, the boys worked throughout the winter, gaining work experience they would remember for the rest of their lives. By the end of July 1934, the cabin and its outhouse were completed. Although it was identified on National Park Service blueprints as the Old Timer's Cabin, CCC enrollees apparently also referred to it informally as the Honeymooner's Cabin. It remains as a reminder of the CCC work programs era in Itasca and serves as a CCC museum. A 1935 National Park Service publication, Park Structures and Facilities, praised it as a cabin built from windfalls rather than cut timber, a relic of days when trees were trees, and a little building whose axe-hewn log ends added greatly to its naive charm.
