Stephens State Park is an 805-acre park in western Morris County, New Jersey, along the upper Musconetcong River north of Hackettstown. Beyond its recreational use, it preserves important remains of the Morris Canal, including part of one of its 23 locks and a section of towpath. Built in 1831 to carry anthracite coal from Pennsylvania toward New York City, the canal linked this landscape to a major era in the region’s industrial and transportation history. The park is also a destination for outdoor activity, with a 2-mile stretch of the Highland Trail, trout fishing on the Musconetcong, and summer camping.
