In 1774, Lord Dunmore, the British Royal Governor of Virginia, including what is now Kentucky, camped on this site while pursuing Shawnee Chief Cornstalk and Mingo Chief Logan after Native Americans had been raiding south of and along the Ohio River. In the conflict known as Lord Dunmore's War, the Indians were defeated, and Chief Cornstalk agreed to stay north of the Ohio River. At the end of the conflict, Chief Logan gave his famous lament: "Who is there to mourn Logan? Not one."
