The Stevens Trail
Transportation
Originally established as a toll road in 1859 by Truman Allen Stevens, this route descended to the bottom of the American River Canyon and climbed the other side to Colfax by way of a bridge that no longer exists. It remained in commercial operation until the existing road was built at the end of the last century. The road was a tremendous success as Iowa Hill's population swelled to ten thousand at the height of the Gold Rush.
