Science & Tech
Mohawk Mountain Ski Area, on the northwest slope of Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall, Connecticut, opened in 1947 under Walt Schoenknecht and became a popular day-trip and night-skiing destination for visitors from the tri-state region. Its development mirrored the rise of skiing in southern New England, with lift expansions and replacements over time, including major updates in 1969, 1978, and 2008. Facing unreliable natural snowfall, it became dependent on artificial snowmaking and gained notice for helping create and popularize the snow gun. After a 1989 tornado damaged lifts and forests, it rebuilt and continued evolving, adding snowtubing in 2019.
