Cathedral Pines is a 42-acre nature preserve in Cornwall, Connecticut, owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, protecting an old-growth forest of white pine and hemlock that remains open to the public. Its preservation began when the Calhoun family bought the land in 1883 to save it from logging and later donated it in 1967. Recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 1982, the preserve was heavily damaged by tornadoes in July 1989, shifting its importance from a famed old-growth grove to a place for studying ecological recovery. Surviving white pines still rise about 120 to 140 feet, and the site figured in Michael Pollan’s Second Nature as a case in environmental ethics.
