Prairie Dog State Park in western Kansas occupies about 1,100 acres on the north shore of Keith Sebelius Lake, a reservoir formed after the dam was completed in 1965 and filled the next year. Established in 1967 and named for Prairie Dog Creek, the park originally had no prairie dogs, but a colony introduced in the 1980s now numbers about 300 and has become a defining feature. It also preserves traces of earlier settlement, including one of the last remaining adobe houses from the 1890s and the 1886 Hillmon one-room schoolhouse, alongside camping, lake recreation, and other outdoor activities.
