Mount Hope, originally called Montaup, rises above Mount Hope Bay in Bristol, Rhode Island, and has long been a meeting place of Indigenous, colonial, and later Rhode Island history. It was once the site of a Pokanoket village and in the seventeenth century became closely associated with Metacomet, or King Philip, whose base of operations during King Philip’s War was near the hill. Nearby Misery Swamp was the site of his death in 1676. After the war, the surrounding lands were settled and developed into farms, including the estate now known as Mount Hope Farm, while the hill and nearby lands have remained significant into the present through preservation and public use.
