On Sept. 1, 1864, Gen. S. D. Lee’s A. C., withdrawn from Jonesboro after the battle of Aug. 31, camped in this vicinity while moving northward by the McDonough Rd. to aid Stewart’s A. C. in Atlanta if Federals attacked at East Point. After learning of Hardee’s defeat at Jonesboro on the 31st, Hood abandoned Atlanta, and Stewart and the militia moved out on the McDonough Rd. on the night of Sept. 1. On Sept. 2, as Lee resumed his march, he met Stewart and the militia coming southward, Stewart heading to Lovejoy's and the militia to Griffin. To cover this withdrawal, Lee continued northward until he was halted at South River, six miles from Atlanta, then countermarched to Lovejoy’s on Sept. 3.
