Alonzo Hereford Cushing was a resident of Fredonia, New York, who graduated from Wet Point in June 1861 and died defending "The Angle" at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He was the grandson of Town of Pomfret founder Judge Zattu Cushing. "Faithful unto death," he was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 6, 2014 by President Barack Obama.
