Waterville’s Civil War monument was erected by the people of Waterville on July 1, 1900, as a permanent record of the names of citizens of the vicinity who volunteered to fight in the wars of the country and of all other American soldiers whose remains are buried in this cemetery. It names battles including Shiloh, Harrison’s Landing, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Jonesboro, Franklin, Petersburg, Appomattox, Limestone Station, Kenesaw Mountain, Cold Harbor, Utoy Creek, Gettysburg, Fort Wagner, Chickamauga, and Mission Ridge. It also records local men who served in the War with England of 1812-1814, the War with Mexico of 1846-1848, the War of the Rebellion of 1861-1865, and the War with Spain of 1898-1899, listing many individuals and their units from Ohio, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois, West Virginia, Maine, Alabama, and the U.S. service.
