Several hundred unknown Confederate soldiers who fell at the Battle of Jonesboro on August 31-September 1, 1864, and repose within this enclosure, served in Hardee’s Corps under Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne, Lieut. Gen. Stephen D. Lee’s Corps, and part of Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler’s Cavalry Corps. Under the command of Lieut. Gen. William J. Hardee and charged with the defense of Jonesboro, they were vastly outnumbered by Federal forces and gave their lives to parry the final thrust at the heart of the Southern Confederacy.
