Gen. Hood's move to checkmate the Federal foray at Jonesboro on the one remaining railroad entering Atlanta resulted in two major engagements on August 31 and September 1, 1864. On August 31, Hardee's and S. D. Lee's Confederate corps made a concerted attack on the Federal 15th Army Corps between the town and the Flint River westward, with Hardee advancing from below the town and Lee in this sector from above it. Lee's three divisions, Anderson's, Clayton's, and Stevenson's, moved directly against the entrenched Federal front at the river, but because they lacked adequate support on their left, Lee's troops were forced to abandon the field.
