On May 5, 1861, one hundred four young men of the town formed the Denmark Danes and became part of the 6th Tennessee Regiment, Company K. The ladies of the town made very nice uniforms from cloth furnished by the citizens, including gray flannel shirts, gray pants with a stripe down each leg, and gray coats, and they made a fine looking company.
