Flowery Mount Church, at the corner of Summit Street and Maddox Avenue, served as the first place where Black children in the community attended school. According to local rumor, the church, which sits atop a mound, had a tunnel underneath that served as an escape route for Blacks who were in trouble, with the other end supposedly in the Summit, MS area.
