William L. Thaxton Jr. House in Houston is Frank Lloyd Wright’s only residential work in the city, designed in 1954 and completed in 1955 for insurance executive William L. Thaxton Jr. Though created for Houston, the design originated in 1950 as an unbuilt California scheme, showing Wright’s occasional reuse of earlier plans. One of his smaller Usonian houses, it is notable for its concrete-block parallelogram form, diamond-module plan, triangular skylights, and close relationship between interior spaces, garden, and pool. After later alterations threatened its character and even its survival, architecture-minded owners restored the house to Wright’s design and added a larger compatible wing.
