Part of original Lots 34 and 35 in Perryville was sold by the town commissioners to Barnabas Burns in 1823, and by 1831 he owned Lot 34 with a dwelling house and grocery storeroom. The property changed hands several times, passing to Sallie Brown in 1856, when its improvements included a frame dwelling and a brewery. In the early 1870s, Joseph and Theresa Blechle owned it as the Blechle House, and it later became the property of Joseph F. and Barbara Hooss Huber. By 1895 it was known as the East Side Hotel, beginning a long period of hotel use under several names. In 1904 John Ziegler was proprietor of the Koch Hotel, and within two years the building was sold to Dr. W.H. Hatcher while retaining that name. Mrs. Hyram Haselhorst bought it in 1915, when it became Hotel Perry, and it was later purchased by J.E. Lottes and again called the Juanita Hotel. In 1920 Lottes sold it to Luther L. Yarberry of Cape Girardeau, who hired Gertrude and Sarah Schenk to help manage it, and Yarberry soon sold his half interest in the Juanita Hotel to his business partner Sarah Schenk. Under John Schenk, the father of Gertrude and Sarah, and Harry Fritz, the hotel was renamed Hotel Perry again in 1938, and it remained under John and Sarah Schenk's direction until closing in 1972. The southern two-thirds of the building was purchased in 1983 and remains owned by the John M. LaRose Trust after Roger and Dorothy Tisher bought the entire building from Oliver and Mary Hoehn that same year, and the 167-year-old building is occupied by MidAmerica Farm Publications Inc., AgWiki Inc., and National Conservation Systems Conferences Inc.
