John Crawford Vaughn was born in a house that once stood here. He served as a captain in the 5th Tennessee Infantry during the Mexican War, then organized and became the first commander of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A., whose first action was the first Battle of Manassas. Promoted to brigadier general, he was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863; after exchange he commanded the cavalry brigade that in 1865 escorted President Jefferson Davis on his flight from Richmond. He later served as Speaker of the Tennessee Senate in 1871, and he died near Thomasville, Georgia, where he is buried.
