Capt. Zachariah Hallock (1749-1820) made approximately 1,700 pairs of shoes in this shop, and his son continued the work until about 1830, when manufactured shoes became available. The building originally stood on the south side of Sound Avenue. About 1860 the Hallock family moved it to this site and converted it into a milk house with a cellar underneath to keep dairy products cool.
